How to Crop a PDF and Remove White Margins

Wide scanner borders, slides floating in white space, a page where you only need one chart: cropping makes the content fill the screen. Here is how, plus the one thing cropping does not do.

Crop PDF: How to Crop a PDF and Remove White Margins

Scans often come with thick borders, exported slides float in a sea of white, and sometimes you only need one figure from a page. Cropping trims all that away so the content fills the screen, the e-reader or the printout.

Step by step

  1. Open the tool. Go to pdfmerger.io/crop-pdf.
  2. Add your PDF. The first page appears with a crop box on it.
  3. Set the crop. Drag the edges or corners of the box, type the margins in millimeters or inches, or click Auto-detect margins.
  4. Choose the pages. Apply the crop to all pages, or only to the page you are looking at.
  5. Click "Crop PDF". The cropped file downloads.

Auto-detect: the fastest way

Auto-detect looks for where the content starts and ends on the page you are viewing and snaps the box to it, with a small border. Check it, nudge an edge if needed, and crop.

Cropping just one page

Use the arrows under the preview to go to the page you need and choose Only page N. The rest of the document stays exactly as it was. This is handy for pulling a single chart or photo out of a report.

What cropping does, and doesn't do

Cropping changes the visible area of each page, which is what every reader, printer and converter uses. The trimmed-off part is hidden, not deleted: it is still inside the file.

Important

Don't crop to get rid of confidential information. Use Redact PDF, which removes the content from the file.

Common uses

  • Removing scanner borders from photographed or scanned documents.
  • Making slides and papers easier to read on a phone or e-reader.
  • Isolating a chart, table or photo from a larger page.
  • Trimming a PDF to fit a label, ticket or card size before printing.

Private by design
