How to Convert iPhone HEIC Photos to PDF (on Any Device)

iPhones save photos as HEIC, which many upload forms and Windows apps still reject. Here is how to turn them into a single PDF that opens anywhere, without installing a converter.

HEIC to PDF: How to Convert iPhone HEIC Photos to PDF (on Any Device)

iPhones save photos as HEIC by default. It is an efficient format, but many upload forms, printers and Windows programs still don't accept it. You photograph a receipt, an ID or a signed page, and the website says "file type not supported".

Converting the photos to PDF solves that, and puts several photos into one tidy file. (Curious about the format itself? See What is a HEIC file?.)

Step by step

  1. Open the tool. Go to pdfmerger.io/heic-to-pdf. It works on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad.
  2. Add your photos. Select as many HEIC files as you need. JPG and PNG can be mixed in.
  3. Put them in order. Use the arrows to move photos, and remove any you don't want.
  4. Choose the page size: A4, Letter, or the same shape as the photo, with an optional white margin.
  5. Click "Convert to PDF". One PDF downloads, with one photo per page.

Which page size should I pick?

  • A4 or Letter if the PDF will be printed or uploaded to a form. Each page turns to match its photo, portrait or landscape.
  • Same as photo if it will only be viewed on screen. Each page has exactly the photo's shape, with no white space.

Sideways photos

Phones often store photos sideways and rely on a hidden tag to show them upright. The converter reads that tag, so photos come out the way your phone shows them.

Quality and file size

Photos are converted at full resolution with high-quality JPEG compression. They look the same in the PDF, and the file stays a reasonable size. If a form has a strict size limit, run the PDF through Compress PDF or a target size page afterwards.

Private by design

Photos of IDs, bank cards and medical papers are exactly the kind you shouldn't upload to a random converter. Here the HEIC files are decoded in your browser with libheif and never leave your device.

Already have JPGs?

Use JPG to PDF. Or, to stop your iPhone saving HEIC at all, go to Settings, Camera, Formats and choose Most Compatible.
